• Lions go 2-2 — At Bridgeport, Ill., Marshall lost to Mt. Carmel 68-60 in the final round of the Capital Classic on Saturday, finishing in fourth place in the eight-team event with a 2-2 record.

Marshall beat Fairfield 70-63 in Saturday’s other game.

Marshall played the taller Mt. Carmel team on even terms for three of the quarters. Two 6-foot-8 players were in the lineup for the winners.

The teams were tied after one period at 13-13 in the game played at Red Hill. Mt. Carmel had a 28-26 lead at the intermission and took a 46-39 lead into the final frame, outscoring the Lions 22-21 in the last eight minutes.

Brock Finkbiner led the 2-2 Lions with 28 points and five rebounds. Lane Brown added 11 points to the totals.

Lawrenceville and Teutopolis played for the Classic championship.

Next — Marshall (2-2) will play host to Hutsonville-Palestine on Friday.

 Lions split — At Lawrenceville, Ill., Marshall got off to a winning start in boys basketball on Friday in its season-opening game in the Capital Classic.

Marshall bested Salem 55-47 in the first game of the tournament at the Lawrenceville site. Brock Finkbiner had 25 points, six steals, three blocks and three assists. Reid Brown had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lions lost to Lawrenceville 77-47 in the nightcap. The host team had a 23-8 lead at the first stop.

Brown had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions.

Lawrenceville defeated Fairfield 80-46 in the first round.
